In the Spotlight

Dürr is a mechanical and plant engineering group that holds leading positions in the world market in its areas of operation. It generates a good 80% of its sales in business with the automotive industry. It furthermore supplies the aircraft, machinery, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries with innovative production and environmental technologies. The Dürr Group operates in the market with three divisions. The Paint and Assembly Systems division supplies production and painting technology, especially for car bodies. Machinery and systems from the Measuring and Process Systems division are used in engine and transmission manufacturing and in final vehicle assembly, among other areas. The third division, Clean Technology Systems, is focused on processes to improve energy efficiency and on exhaust air purification. Dürr has 48 business locations in 21 countries worldwide. The Group achieved sales of € 1.26 billion with approximately 5,900 employees in 2010.

Bietigheim-Bissingen Germany, September 29, 2011 – Dürr continues to strengthen its position in China by constructing an automotive paint shop for Beijing Hyundai Motors Company in the Chinese capital Beijing. The volume of this contract, issued by Hyundai in the second quarter of 2011, which Dürr is undertaking as general contractor, amounts to a figure in the upper double-digit million-euro range.

Dürr is responsible for the construction of the entire paint shop, including the application, automation and conveyor technology. The latter includes not only the high performance skid conveyors for 100 units per hour, but also the automated conveyor connections from the body shop and in final assembly. An important part of this concept is a high-bay warehouse for car bodies in the paint shop, which ensures an assembly compatible sequencing of the vehicles.

Hyundai benefits from Dürr’s experience in this project, since the plant manufacturer has already built two paint shops – which began operations in 2003 and 2007 – for the Korean car manufacturer in Beijing and Shaghai. Innovative Dürr technology like the supervisory control system EcoEMOS allows easy access to production data and in this way lowers the production costs. Dürr’s proven application technology is convincing with its optimized paint and material usage, thus increasing efficiency and sustainability.

Paint application is carried out with 38 type EcoRP L033 painting robots and EcoBell2 atomizers in one primer line and two topcoat lines. All three painting lines are equipped with cleaning equipment of type Ecopaint Clean for car body cleaning prior to painting. Seam sealing and underbody protection is performed with 15 EcoRS sealing robots.

As with the previous plant, the experienced project team will realize quick delivery times. Already as early as the second half of 2012, this plant will paint 300 000 different Hyundai models per year – with an option to expand capacity to 400 000 car bodies per year.
