In the Spotlight

The Dürr Group is one of the world's leading mechanical and plant engineering firms. Products, systems and services offered by Dürr enable highly efficient manufacturing processes in different industries. Business with automobile manufacturers and their suppliers accounts for approximately 65% of Dürr's sales. Other market segments include, for example, the mechanical engineering, chemical and pharmaceutical industries and - since the takeover of HOMAG Group AG in October 2014 - the woodworking industry. Dürr has 94 business locations in 28 countries and generates annual sales of approx. € 3.2 billion with around 13,700 employees. The Dürr Group operates in the market with five divisions: • Paint and Assembly Systems: paint shops and final assembly systems for the automotive industry • Application Technology: robot technologies for the automatic application of paint as well as sealants and adhesives • Measuring and Process Systems: balancing and cleaning systems as well as testing and filling technology • Clean Technology Systems: exhaust-air purification systems and energy-efficiency technology • Wood Processing Systems: machinery for the woodworking industry

The EcoDryScrubber from Dürr is an environmentally-friendly and reliable solution that leverages dry separation to capture and filter out overspray that occurs during painting. A leader in paint systems, Dürr has equipped 80 percent of its paint shops with the innovative dry separation technology since the EcoDryScrubber was introduced. This process has also established itself in the highly competitive Japanese market. Train operator JR Tokai, for example, will rely on the use of the EcoDryScrubber technology in its new paintshop for aluminum panels on the Shinkansen high-speed train. The system is scheduled to enter service in Hamamatsu in summer 2015.

The Shinkansen high-speed train is known for its ability to reach all major cities in Japan quickly and on time. For many people, it has proven to be a very reliable means of everyday transportation. An important part of the train's success story, which spans several decades, is the fact that the overall vehicle concept offered and its individual components have been continually further advanced. This is why JR Tokai made the decision to fit aerodynamically optimized aluminum panels that are coated in a special paint booth. The overspray that accumulates in the booth will be filtered out using the EcoDryScrubber dry separation system from Dürr, which has enjoyed especially high demand in the automotive industry since it was launched six years ago. The reason for the popularity of the system is simple: Limestone powder acts as a natural binding agent and eliminates the need to use water and coagulation chemicals and to dispose of paint sludge. Dry separation of overspray not only makes the exhaust air from the booth cleaner; the system also requires little maintenance, is easy to operate, is compatible with almost every climate, and can even be used for all types of paint. The environment profits as well, since the paint-saturated limestone powder does not need to be disposed of and can be employed in other areas such as the cement industry. "We are pleased that we can serve another industry with this project, not to mention a market that is as technologically challenging as the one in Japan", affirms Hirokazu Okahana, Managing Director of Dürr Japan.
