A few years ago, the educational division of MFN decided to offer practical shot-peening training in as many countries as possible. Following this concept being first implemented in the training centres in Holland and Germany, it is now also taking place in Singapore at the ARTC (Advanced Remanufacturing and Technology Centre). One of the biggest obstacles in trying to organise practical shot peening training is to have access to the machinery itself. Such equipment, especially if CNC-controlled, is very expensive, and to use it just for training purposes is hard to justify. MFN has successfully created a concept in which, similar to the theoretical classes, three levels of knowledge are taught over a period of 3 days. All the optional practical training classes are late afternoon sessions from 4-6 o'clock p.m., taking place right after the theoretical part. This has a few advantages: on the one hand, just-absorbed knowledge can be tested in a real workshop surrounding; on the other hand, such later-afternoon classes are easier for the students to attend compared to a separate practical training day. The right mixture between theoretical lessons and practical demonstrations will guarantee that the students can benefit the utmost from such a workshop.

Depending on training centre or workshop, such practical training can also include hands-on training on different equipment and devices such as the Ervin tester, residual stress measurement by X-ray diffraction, flap peening, sieve analyser, photo-optical particle analyser, Almen gages and Almen software.

The organisation is continuously trying to improve the training with every event organized. MFN is convinced that placing emphasis on practical shot peening training will improve the overall education in this field.
