From October 18 to 20, 2025, the 8th National Conference on Shot Peening Technology and the 5th Conference on Abrasive Media Technology were successfully held in Dafeng District, Yancheng City, Jiangsu Province. The event was organized by the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society (CMES) and jointly hosted by its Failure Analysis Division and Materials Division, together with Jiangsu Tonglue Metal Products Co., Ltd. and Jiangsu Daqi Metal Surface Treatment Co., Ltd. The Joint Research Center for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing of Aero-Engines served as the co-organizer.
The three-day event brought together 158 participants from 87 organizations across China, representing universities, research institutes, and industry. A total of 75 technical papers were submitted, and 43 papers were presented during the sessions, demonstrating both the depth of academic research and the strength of industrial innovation in China’s shot peening and surface-strengthening community.
Opening Session
The conference opened under the chairmanship of Senior Engineer Chen Xiaohu.
Professor Zhang Zheng of Beihang University, Chair of the CMES Failure Analysis Division, delivered the keynote opening address, reviewing recent progress in China’s shot peening technologies and setting new goals for the next two years.
Mr. Wang Qi, General Manager of Jiangsu Daqi Metal Surface Treatment Co., Ltd., warmly welcomed all participants and expressed confidence in the growing collaboration between academia and industry.
Professor Vincent Ji from Université Paris-Saclay, an internationally recognized expert in peening and abrasive media, shared the latest global developments and research trends.
Professor Jiang Chuanhai from Shanghai Jiao Tong University introduced the conference organization and overall agenda.
Following the concise but inspiring opening ceremony, all delegates gathered for a group photograph, marking the beginning of two intensive days of academic exchange and technical discussions.
Technical Program
The technical sessions covered a wide range of topics central to surface-enhancement science and engineering, including:
• Conventional techniques such as shot peening, ultrasonic impact treatment, polishing, and roller burnishing;
• Advanced methods including laser peening, liquid peening, micro-particle peening, and composite peening;
• Residual-stress formation and microstructural evolution induced by peening;
• Effects of surface strengthening on fatigue life and stress-corrosion resistance;
• Peen forming and manufacturing processes;
• Theoretical modeling and numerical simulation of peening behavior;
• Strengthening and failure analysis of critical components;
• Development and application of advanced peening equipment;
• Innovations in abrasive media and their industrial use;
• Residual-stress analysis and characterization technologies.
The sessions featured a balance of theoretical studies and engineering case reports, reflecting China’s rapid progress from laboratory research to large-scale industrial application. Lively discussions followed each presentation, with experts and young scholars exchanging ideas and building valuable collaborations.
Young Researchers and Future Development
One notable highlight of this year’s conference was the strong presence of young researchers. Their active participation and insightful questions brought fresh energy and creativity to the technical discussions. Senior experts encouraged the next generation to continue advancing China’s capabilities in shot peening and abrasive media technology.
Participants widely recognized that this conference served as an effective platform for integrating academic research with industrial practice. It also promoted international collaboration, with overseas experts contributing valuable perspectives on materials performance and process optimization.
Looking Ahead
The event concluded with closing remarks from Professor Jiang Chuanhai, who emphasized the vital role of shot peening and surface-strengthening technologies in sectors such as aerospace, automotive manufacturing, and energy equipment. He called for continued innovation, stronger collaboration between academia and industry, and broader international engagement.
According to the organizing committee, the 9th National Conference on Shot Peening Technology and the 6th Conference on Abrasive Media Technology are planned for 2027, with the host institution to be determined after consultation and review.
Special appreciation was expressed to Jiangsu Tonglue Metal Products Co., Ltd., Jiangsu Daqi Metal Surface Treatment Co., Ltd., and the Joint Research Center for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing of Aero-Engines for their dedicated efforts, as well as to all participating organizations for their strong support in making the conference a success.
